Check & Roll Privacy Policy
Last updated 25 October 2026
Check & Roll is an RV checklist app for iPhone and iPad, made by Long Road Software. This page explains what it does with information about you.
In short
- There's no account, and nothing to sign up for.
- There are no analytics, no ads, no tracking, and no third-party code in the app.
- Check & Roll sends nothing to Long Road Software. There is no Long Road Software server.
- Your checklists are kept on your iPhone or iPad and, if you use iCloud, in the private part of your own iCloud account. Long Road Software can't see either.
- The hands-free walk-through recognizes speech on your device, and only while it's running. What it hears is never recorded and never sent anywhere.
- Motion is used only to pause the walk-through while the rig is moving.
What Check & Roll keeps on your device
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your rigs, checklists and steps, and earlier versions of each checklist (so an edit can be undone) | They're your lists |
| Each run of a checklist, and each check, skip or uncheck: which step, when, and who | Run history, Undo and Restore, and knowing when a list is finished |
| A name for this device ("iPhone", "iPad", or a name you type in Settings) and a random ID made when the app was installed | So run history can say who checked what, even with two phones on one Apple Account |
| Deletion markers: which rig or checklist was deleted, when and by whom | So a deleted list doesn't come back from another device |
| Your settings: the walk-through's words, wake word and speaking speed, chimes and haptics, which rig and list you last had open, and whether you finished the welcome screens | To work the way you set it up |
| Sync bookkeeping: changes iCloud hasn't confirmed yet, when the app last synced, and the tags iCloud gives each record | So nothing is lost or sent twice |
| A small file for the widget: each list's name, its rig's name and its progress line | The widget reads this instead of your whole database |
Your lists and their history live in the app's database, in a storage area shared only with Check & Roll's own widget. Your rigs, the current version of each checklist, run history and the deletion markers are copied to your own iCloud, as described next. Everything else in the table (earlier versions of a checklist, your settings, the sync bookkeeping and the widget's file) stays on this device and is never copied anywhere.
The app also writes short diagnostic messages to your device's system log, such as "Couldn't save the sync state". They say what went wrong, not what's on your lists, and never include anything you said.
Your iCloud
If you're signed in to iCloud, Check & Roll copies your rigs, checklists, run history and deletion markers to a private database in your own iCloud account, so your iPhone and iPad have the same lists and a new phone gets them back.
- Only your Apple Account can read that private database. Long Road Software can't see it, and nothing in it is sent anywhere else.
- The contents of every record are stored in CloudKit's encrypted fields. CloudKit encrypts them on your device before saving them to iCloud. If you turn on Advanced Data Protection, only you hold the keys.
- It uses your iCloud storage. If your iCloud storage is full, syncing pauses and the app keeps working on your device.
- The name you give each device, and the random ID made at install, go into iCloud with each check, reset and edit, so run history on your other devices can say who did what.
- If you're not signed in to iCloud, or iCloud is off for Check & Roll, nothing is uploaded and the app works fully on the device. If you sign out, syncing stops and every checklist stays on the device.
Sharing a checklist with a partner who uses a different Apple Account isn't in this version. If that changes, this page will say how it works before it's available.
The hands-free walk-through
The walk-through reads each step aloud and listens for a few words like "done" and "skip".
- The first time you start one, iOS asks whether Check & Roll may use the microphone and Speech Recognition.
- It listens only while a walk-through is running. Ending the walk-through turns the microphone off.
- Speech is recognized on your device only. If your device can't recognize speech on the device for your language, the walk-through doesn't listen at all.
- What it hears is never recorded and never sent anywhere. The words it hears are shown on screen as a caption while you use it and are not saved.
- Steps are read aloud with your device's own speech synthesis.
- If you say no to the microphone or Speech Recognition, the walk-through still works with buttons on screen.
Siri and Shortcuts
Siri is Apple's service. When you ask Siri something like "What's next in Check & Roll?", what you say is handled by Siri under Apple's privacy policy. Check & Roll receives only the request (which action, and which checklist) and answers on your device.
So that Siri recognizes your checklists by name ("Start departure"), Check & Roll gives iOS the names of your checklists and the rigs they're on, as every app with Siri phrases does.
Motion
While a hands-free walk-through is running, Check & Roll asks iOS whether the device is in a moving vehicle, and pauses the walk-through while it is, so nobody reads a phone at the wheel. iOS asks for Motion & Fitness permission the first time. Nothing about your motion is stored or sent. If you say no, the walk-through simply won't pause for driving.
What Long Road Software receives
Nothing from the app. Long Road Software gets only what Apple provides to every developer: App Store sales and download reports and, if you've chosen in iOS Settings to share analytics with app developers, crash reports and usage statistics that Apple collects. That is Apple's collection, under Apple's privacy policy, and it doesn't include your checklists.
The Help and Support link in Check & Roll's Settings opens the Check & Roll website (checkandroll.app) in your web browser. The app sends nothing with it.
Deleting your data
A checklist or a rig. Deleting a checklist in the app removes it, with its steps and its checks, from all your devices. A small deletion marker stays, so the deletion reaches every device, and so do the start time and starter of each of its runs, which contain no step text. Deleting a rig deletes its checklists too.
Everything on one device. Deleting the app deletes everything it kept on that device. Your iCloud copy stays until you delete it.
Check & Roll's data in iCloud. In your device's Settings, under your name › iCloud › Manage Account Storage (the wording varies between iOS versions), choose Check & Roll and delete its data. Then:
- Your lists stay on each of your devices. Deleting the iCloud copy doesn't delete them.
- Check & Roll stops syncing and says so in its Settings: "Check & Roll's data was deleted from iCloud, so syncing is paused."
- Nothing is uploaded to iCloud again until you tap Sync Now in Check & Roll's Settings. Then that device uploads its lists again, and your other devices start syncing again when they see them.
To remove everything, delete Check & Roll's data from iCloud and delete the app from each device.
Changes to this policy
If a later version changes what the app does with your information, this page will be updated before that version is available, with a new date at the top.
